East Riddlesden Hall

by Colin, 23rd May 2010, 13 Volunteers

A gloriously sunny day (30oC) with the hall and grounds, especially the wild garden, looking their best. Working with the groundsman, Nick, we split into three groups, one clearing the overgrown garden of what used to be the home of the property manager. There is a plan to turn this into a children’s centre.

Another group weeded and tidied the beds in the formal garden.

Meanwhile, the third group spent the day digging out brambles and cutting down alder saplings from amongst the nettles in a copse down near the river, so that Nick can mow a path or two through it.

It’s interesting to see the inroads that have been made in this area over the years, where not so long ago we used to dump all the grass and brambles raked from the bank after its annual cut. Now all the debris is trailered away by Nick to be burnt in the tenant farmer’s field.

Thank you, Nick, for the cakes at lunchtime, and from those of us who went for a pot of tea in the bothy after finishing work, thanks for the free tea. Much appreciated.
